Folly fishing pier maintenance to continue through summer

Posted: Updated:

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) – The maintenance project to prolong the life of the fishing pier at Folly Beach will continue through the summer and suspend the Moonlight Mixer events.

According to Charleston County Parks officials, the repairs require portions of the 19-year-old pier to be closed off until the project's completion. Most of the main walkway of the Folly Beach Fishing Pier will remain open and operational for normal public use, including fishing and walking.

While the project unfolds, officials say regular operations and fishing tournaments will continue as scheduled for 2014. However, until the project is complete, the pier's Moonlight Mixers dance series, which takes place exclusively on the diamond head of the pier, will be suspended.

The project is an expected, ongoing maintenance effort to keep the pier in first-class condition for many years.

The first phase of the project, which began this past winter, is complete, officials said. That phase included replacing 750 bolts and10 timber cross braces.

This summer, the second phase of the project kicks off and includes assessing, repairing and encapsulating pilings on the 1,045-foot-long pier. The current expected date of completion on the project is not known at this time, but is estimated for Fall 2014.

The pier is open for normal daily operations as scheduled, from 7 a.m. – sunset in March, 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. in April, and 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. May through September.

For fans of the mixer, there is a replacement party at the Mount Pleasant Pier called Shaggin' on the Cooper.
