Katie's Krops featured in new documentary

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Katie Stagliano is one of three featured people in a new documentary that shows the efforts made around the world to combat hunger.

According to the documentary's website, the movie, called The Starfish Throwers, follows "a five-star chef, a retired school teacher and a sixth-grade master gardener fight for a seemingly lost cause—until they discover their impact may reach further than their own actions."

"You never know what can grow from just one thing," Stagliano says in the film. "You could be inspiring hundreds with just one small action."

At least locally, Stagliano has inspired a great deal of change. Her nonprofit, Katie's Krops, recently picked up a $66,000 donation from Bi-Lo and fed hundreds of needy people last October as part of an anniversary celebration.

The organization has spread to 25 states so far.

The Pinewood Prep freshman says she feels fortunate to help those who can't help themselves. Katie's Krops serves free meals at Summerville Baptist Church once a month.

The movie also showcases Allan Law, a middle school teacher who delivers sandwiches to people in need at night, and chef Narayanan Krishnan who spends time every day delivering meals to the needy.

The movie is playing Sunday night in Greece. In a few weeks it will also be played at the Myrtle Beach International Film Festival.
