Animal Society treating sick pup left for dead on Johns Island

Posted: Updated:

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) – A good Samaritan saved the life of a dying dog that may have been suffering outside since the most recent winter storm, said officials with the Charleston Animal Society.

Authorities say the pup suffers from a genetic condition that's aggravated when left untreated and was left on the side of the road. She is the second dog found in the Ravenel area in the last month.

Her paws quiver without stopping and she has scabs that cascade down her furless body. The animal shelter says these are signs of abandonment.

"That puppy just from walking was crying in pain because of how painful it was to move, so nothing good would have happened to that puppy. It would not have survived," said Aldwin Roman.

But now with hands of love, the puppy named Pandora is well on her way to recovery after being found on the side of the road last week suffering from demodectic mange.

"It's something that affects dogs with a compromised immune system. This has been going on for a really long time with this dog," said Roman. "This isn't something that just happened in the past couple days."

In the meantime, the shelter says it will take a couple of months until Pandora is ready to be adopted.

Roman says people who suspect a dog is abandoned or mistreated should call the local animal shelter or the Charleston Animal Society at 843-747-4849.

The animal society is currently offering an adoption event for adult dogs . The Luck of the Irish Adoption Event lets potential pet owners draw the price of their adoption out of a "pot of gold" at the front desk.

The adoption event ends at 6 p.m. St. Patrick's Day. The Charleston Animal Society is located at 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston.
