Burke's record-setting shot putter commits to Southern Illinois

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – A Burke High School student set an indoor shot put record of 56-feet, 7.5-inches at the New Balance Indoor Nationals over the weekend.

Raven Saunders is one of the top shot put recruits in the country and, knowing that, she waited until setting the new record to announce her college choice.

Saunders said it was down to Arizona State and Southern Illinois, but on Monday the track-and-field star said she was heading to the Midwest.

"Southern Illinois Carbondale has a great history of developing throwers.  The head coach was an Olympian and coached many other NCAA champions," she said.

Her coach, Herbert Johnson, said Saunders made a great decision and really put Charleston on the map for NCAA sports.

"This is not just great for Burke High School. This is great for Charleston itself," he said. "When people put us on a site, it's fantastic."

Saunders said her next goal is to set the South Carolina State Indoor and National Outdoor records before she graduates this spring.
