Somber second anniversary in search for Gayle McCaffrey

Posted: Updated:

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) – It's been two years since Gayle McCaffrey was last seen. The West Ashley mother of two was reported missing by her husband Robert. On Monday, McCaffrey's pastor remembered her during Sunday's service.

Pastor Marshall Blalock says McCaffrey was loved by all at First Baptist Church and they haven't forgotten the love she showed them as a long-time congregation member.

Flowers were left at the altar over the weekend where McCaffrey worshipped in honor of the missing mother of two.

"So today our hearts are still broken because there's still no definitive answers to what actually happened to Gayle," Blalock said.

Blalock says McCaffrey never left the hearts of the congregation, and this week's flowers were donated by her family in the woman's honor.

"We know this about Gayle: we know that she would never have voluntarily left her family and all of her friends, so whatever happened we know it didn't happen because she somehow decided to leave," Blalock said.

McCaffrey's home was cleaned out last September by volunteers. It was then rented out.

Detectives with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office consider her disappearance on open and active case. Sheriff Al Cannon even named her husband as a suspect.

Since naming Robert McCaffrey as a suspect nearly two years ago, officers and hundreds of volunteers have searched all over the state for signs of McCaffrey, from a pond in West Ashley to property in Traveler's Rest.

Robert McCaffrey was given a speeding ticket in that area the morning he reported his wife missing.

"I'm sure there will be other areas because until Gayle is found, we're going to continue to assist the law enforcement as well as the family," said Monica Caison with the CUE Center for Missing Persons.

There are no future searches planned, but at the church Blalock continues to keep the missing mother in his prayers.

Caison said McCaffrey will be mentioned as one of the missing people for whom they are searching at their annual conference this weekend.
