WADMALAW ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A woman who was trying to change a tire on Wadmalaw Island is now in the hospital being treated for serious injuries after she was hit by a car.

Authorities say the driver, 59-year old Dennis O'Keefe, was arrested and charged with DUI.

Eric Watson with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office says 29-year old Sarah Steed was hit by a silver Nissan Altima around 9:30 p.m. Monday. The force was enough to send the victim flying away from her Toyota Solara.

Emergency officials say she was transported to Medical University Hospital.

The crash at Maybank Highway and Bears Bluff Road is being investigated by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office Traffic Division. Maybank Highway near Bears Bluff Road was closed for an hour while emergency personnel were on scene investigating the accident.

Neighbors who live near where the accident occurred say the section of Maybank near Bears Bluff Road is prone to accidents.

"I can hardly see because there are trees on the side and of course, there's a big ditch," said Celina Barron, who has lived in the neighborhood for several years. "I've had an incident where a guy was driving too fast and I was just about to turn into my road and he was about to hit me in the back."

Barron says the road is not well-lit and many drivers speed.

"I guess the speed limit probably needs to go down a little bit more so people can slow down. They are driving too fast on that curve," Barron said.

O'Keefe was given a bond of $997 during a hearing Tuesday morning.
