Aging in place topic of seminar in Lowcountry

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Aging in Place Coalition has scheduled a meeting on how baby boomers stay in their homes as they age.

Wednesday's program in Charleston centers on the concept of villages, associations set up to provide help to members with everything from transportation and home repairs to social and cultural connections.

The first village was started on Beacon Hill in Boston 13 years ago and now there are 120 operating nationwide as well as in Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.

There is a village on Hilton Head Island, while residents in Sun City, just off the island, and Charleston are considering starting new ones.

Charleston's Office on Aging is also sponsoring the meeting.
