GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) — The Coast Guard is responding to an oil sheen on the Sampit River near downtown Georgetown.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston crews were notified of an unknown sheen at approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday. The report came from a business located along the river.

Coast Guard Station Georgetown launched a small boat crew to investigate the situation and, after arriving on-scene, determined the oil came from the ArcelorMittal Steel Mill.

The ArcelorMittal Steel Mill is investigating the cause of the spill, according to Coast Guard officials.

According to the Coast Guard, an oil spill response organization has been contracted to conduct clean-up operations.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston will remain on-scene to verify safe and thorough cleanup operations, officials said late Wednesday night.
