WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) – A Colleton County man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Thursday for robbing an elderly couple at a Walterboro hotel.

According to the solicitor's office, jurors convicted Mack Washington, Jr. of two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The trial took four days.

Prosecutors showed that Washington and another teen planned to rob people at a motel in January 2012. The hid behind a wall and waited for an elderly couple to enter their room.

According to the solicitor, Washington grabbed the woman from behind and held a knife to her throat while demanding valuables. He threatened to kill her. Washington and the other person made off with $14,000 in valuables.

A day later, investigators got a tip that Washington had stashed two guns at an apartment. They later learned the guns had been stolen from the couple.

Prosecutors during the trial linked Washington to the guns and the co-defendant admitted to investigators that he and Washington had committed the crime. In June 2012, Washington was arrested.

Washington had four prior convictions for burglary, strong armed robbery, accessory, and resisting arrest among other crimes.

Washington has to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
