Federal agency settles with SC charter schools

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - An arm of the U.S. Department of Education has reached an agreement with the South Carolina Charter School District regarding access to the Internet for people with disabilities.

Officials announced Thursday that the Office of Civil Rights reached an agreement with the district to ensure it complies with portions of the Rehabilitation Act of 1972 and the American With Disabilities Act.

The office said schools' websites and online learning environments weren't readily available to people with disabilities, especially those needing special technology to access the Internet.

Under the agreement, the district will create a committee to direct resources and provide technical assistance as schools work to ensure web accessibility. It will also develop a policy requiring all schools that provide instruction via the Internet to be readily accessible and useable.
