Berkeley sheriff to ask council for money to staff jail

Posted: Updated:

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) – Berkeley County's sheriff plans to ask Monday for money to pay for officers at the jail so that the second floor of the facility can be filled and staffed.

It's been several years since the county opened its new jail facility to house more inmates, but only the first floor of the three-story building is being used because there is not enough money to fund officers on the upper floors.

Sheriff Wayne Dewitt says this has created issued since the jail opened. On Monday, he will go before the Berkeley County Council to ask for enough money to staff the second floor of the jail.

Officials with the sheriff's department did not have information on how much money was being requested or how many officers are needed to staff one floor of the jail.
