AWENDAW, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston County Sheriff's Department released a statement Monday that a deputy shot and killed a dog after the animal attacked him.

According to the release, the deputy was responding to reports of stray dogs in the area of Highway 17 and Highway 45 in Awendaw.

The deputy said he was trying to remove one dog, that appeared to have been hit by a car, from the road when another dog came up and bit him on the forearm.

The deputy was forced to shoot the attacking dog, killing it. Officials said the dog was described as a pit bull.

The deputy was treated for his injuries and the incident is under review.
