House bill would put brakes on Port Royal sale

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Two bills in General Assembly seek a quick sale of the old Port of Port Royal, but a third measure puts on the brakes.

The Beaufort Gazette ( ) reported a bill by Green Pond Rep. Kenneth Hodges would remove from the market the property that the state has been trying to sell for years.

The Democrat's bill calls for a re-evaluation of how the 317 acres might be used by the state. Hodges says if the state cannot sell the property, maybe it needs to be off the market.

Another House bill would force the sale by June 30th and, if no buyer is found, auction the property.

The General Assembly ordered the Ports Authority to sell the property a decade ago but several development deals have fallen through.
