DOT: There are options for ice issues on Ravenel Bridge

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Department of Transportation says it has a few option to better prepare the Ravenel Bridge for a winter storm.

The announcement comes more than a month after ice fell from the bridge cables and shut down the Ravenel Bridge during two winter storms in February.

Now the transportation department says it is looking at several options to keep ice from forming on the cables, including coatings, sweepers, and an electrolyte impulse coating technology, a device that would send a shockwave throughout the cables to melt the ice before it builds up.

The DOT says it is also looking at the cost involved in the impulse technology.

The agency is also dealing with plans for treating the road, including an alternative sealant that would protect the roadway after salt is applied.

The DOT has not made a final decision. Officials are still talking with the bridge designers on the best options for the Ravenel Bridge.
