Katie's Krops faces crime in community garden

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Seeds have not yet been buried in the soil for the spring  at Katie's Krops in Summerville, but this season, the garden's founder has already seen the unthinkable.

"This past weekend we had a garden workday and we noticed that items were missing from the garden and someone had come and taken them," said Katie's Krops founder, Katie Stagliano. "We are missing four tables, seven chairs; we are missing three wheelbarrows, even our cultivator -- just all sorts of items have been taken from us."

Katie's Krops was started when Katie was in the third grade. Now a freshmen at Pinewood Prep, Katie's program has gained national acclaim with more than 60 gardens in 25 states.

"We were just trying to help people in need and donate vegetables to people in need and it makes it harder when we don't have the supplies that we need," Stagliano said. "It's really sad that someone would come up here and prevent that from happening."

The thieves may have stolen equipment, but they haven't stolen Stagliano's spirit.

"I'm really sad that someone would come up and do this. But I'm hoping that it will show people you can't take anything of ours and have it bring us down," she said. "We are going to continue helping those in need."

If you would like to help, the stolen items have been added to Katie's Krops wish list on the non-profit's website here.
