Beaufort animal services agency gets $6,000 for medication

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) – The Beaufort County Animal Services office was awarded this week $6,000 for medication to prevent heartworm prevention.

The money was granted to the animal services office as part of the Hearts on the Go campaign.

Starting Friday, 18 dogs will begin a two-day heartworm treatment followed by a six-week recovery. After they recover, all of the dogs will be taken to the Hilton Head Humane Association to be adopted.

"With this grant from the ASPCA, vet assistance from HHHA and housing from Camp Green Dog and Evergreen Pet Lodge, these dogs will go through their much-needed treatment and then be up for adoption. We hope this new program will be one of many to come in 2014," said HHHA Director Franny Gerthoffer.

"Unfortunately 80% of the dogs over the age of 2 we receive at the shelter are heartworm positive with the average cost of treatment being $350. This grant and teamwork between organizations really allow these dogs to have a future and be adopted into a new family," said BCAS Director Tallulah Trice.
