Local biz owner buys bullet-proof vests for K-9 units

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Two Charleston Police Department K-9 units have brand new bullet-proof vests thanks to the generosity of a local business.

Clyde Burris of Burris Liquors on Meeting Street bought vests for the two dogs for $1,700. Burris said he read a similar story of someone donating a vest to a K-9 unit and decided to do the same thing.

"I know criminals try to hurt them and they need to be protected just like police officers. They put their lives on the line just like a police officer," he said. "I love dogs just like I love people."

The vests were given to K-9 Dulan and K-9 Panzer, according to Lt. Michael Thomas, supervisor of the K-9 Unit.

K-9 Dulan is 3 years old and has been with the police department a year and is Police Officer Caleb Bradish's partner. K-9 Panzer is 6 years old and has been with the police department 4 years and is Sgt. David Tharp's partner.

"This is a wonderful thing he has done," said Charleston Chief of Police Greg Mullen. "This is just a reflection of the great relationship we have with our community partners."

"I owned a Doberman for 13 years and putting him to sleep was one of the hardest things I ever had to do," Burris said.
