Keys, Stephens play on 'dock-court' for Family Circle Cup promo

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – It's the first time a match has been played on wood and it happened in downtown Charleston. But don't worry tennis fans and players, the dock-court probably won't ever come into popular use.

The court was set up at the dock on Boyce's Wharf as part of a promotional photo shoot for the Family Circle Cup.

But fans and curious onlookers got to watch Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys play on the wooden court for about 30 minutes with the Ravenel Bridge, the USS Yorktown and Charleston's harbor as a backdrop. Despite windy conditions and the lack of a barrier, they two highly ranked players only lost one ball to the harbor.

Keys said she was looking forward to getting back on a more standard surface.

"They say playing on grass is hard with the bounce and everything, but playing on playing on wood is a little bit harder than that," she said.

Keys will play the second match of the day on the Billie Jean King Court. She faces Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Stephens has a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the Elina Svitolina/Jarmila Gajdosova match. Gajdosova earned her place in the main draw after defeating Paszek on Saturday and Townsend on Sunday.

Play resumes at 10 a.m. Monday.
