Uninsured look for help as ACA deadline approaches

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The deadline to sign up for the Affordable Care Act is quickly approaching and the rush to sign up has been slowing things down. Monday morning, the healthcare.gov website was move at a snail's pace.

Behind the book shelves at the Charleston County Public Library, a navigator from Palmetto Project is helping Marilyn Owens. She's trying to add her daughter to her medical policy.

Her daughter is a college student and works two part-time jobs.

"What they're offering, she cannot afford to pay the premium. So I'm trying to get her onto mine in order to help her with her health coverage," said Owens.

Owens is one of many people trying to finish enrolling their loved ones for federal healthcare coverage by midnight. But once again, there are problems.

"Well I hope I'll be able to accomplish this today, seeing the web site is so backed up," said Owens.

Shelli Quenga is the director of programs for Palmetto Project. She admits healthcare.gov is running slowly. Still, she wants people to be prepared when they visit her, or go online elsewhere.

"When you come to enroll, you would need to know the social security numbers of everybody who is on your tax return, their dates of birth, and then have an idea about your projected income for 2014," said Quenga.

Shelli remind those who are trying to sign-up to be patient, and know they won't be penalized because of delays in the system.

"If  you've been trying to call, if you've been trying to get online and haven't been able to, then you're still considered in the queue for health insurance. So you still have time," said Quenga.

Uninsured citizens who don't sign-up could face a federal tax penalty of 1 percent of their income, or $95, whichever is greater.

Navigators with Palmetto Project will be at the Charleston County Public Library on Calhoun Street until 9 p.m. Monday. If you can't make it, call 1-800-318-2596 for enrollment help.
