FOLLY BEACH, S. C. (WCIV) -- It's been a hard fought battle on Folly Beach, but the fates of the mayoral candidates have finally come down to the voters and the ballot.

"This particular race the election committee knew it was a very contested race so the turnout would be very high," said Kenneth Dilks, the precinct clerk.

Incumbent Tim Goodwin is up for re-election, but former City Administrator Toni Connor-Rooksthinks she can do a better a job as Mayor.

"Our quality of life has skyrocketed as opposed to the four years previous, so I think it's very important that we retain Mayor Goodwin," said Sean Lowery, a voter.

"I voted for Toni due to their transparency, I know she's been working for the city for 17 years, and I think she would do a good job," said Elizabeth Beckman.

Folks who live on Folly Beach say there's a lot a stake on this mayoral race.

"There are a lot of important issues in this year's [election], probably the most I've seen in my 18 years here," said Dan Clamp, a voter. "The alcohol ban, public safety, there's just a lot of issues that voters are concerned about and rightfully so."

Poll officials say this year's mayoral race needed extra help.

"Rather than using regular pole managers, they took precinct clerks from other precincts who are very experienced and brought us in," said Dilks.

It's a race that has Folly Beach divided in two, but when the polls close, residents say so will the tension as well.

"Election time is very deceiving and people that don't live here are sometimes confused by the amount of passion that we show in our election. But when it's over, it's over and we all come together as a community," said Clamp.
