New group forms to keep tabs on activity at SRS

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A new public interest group has formed to keep tabs on activities at the Savannah River Site.

The group called SRS Watch says in a release Thursday it will monitor programs like the cleanup of high-level nuclear waste at the former nuclear complex near Aiken.

The group says it will also keep track of overseas nuclear materials that are housed at the site, as well as a facility currently under construction where weapons-grade plutonium is planned to be made into commercial nuclear reactor fuel.

Activist Tom Clements is serving as director of SRS Watch. He says advocating for alternative ways to dispose of the plutonium will be among the group's first major initiatives.

Clements also says SRS Watch will track nuclear-related issues throughout the Southeast.
