Authorities are investigating after a police pursuit in Creek County left one man dead late Thursday evening.

Sapulpa Police attempted to stop the suspect, identified as Kevin Hilburn, for an expired tag around 11:30 p.m. Hilburn left the scene at a high rate of speed leading officers from Creek County into west Tulsa.

Hilburn was driving east on I-44 and attempted to make an exit near 33rd West Avenue when he reportedly missed a curve and went straight into the median, a report describes. His truck rolled over several times.

Officials stated that he was ejected from the truck he was driving and died on the scene.

He had a suspended license and police said the truck was stolen.

Records indicate that Hilburn was previously incarcerated for three counts of eluding an officer. He was released October 2013.

"Anytime somebody makes the decision to run from a police officer, that endangers them themselves, the officers that are having to pursue them, and anybody else on the roadway. It's one of the worst decisions a person can make, and you can see by the end of this one, that it's a very bad decision on his part," said Maj. Jeff Gilliland with Sapulpa police.

Another passenger in the vehicle, identified as Michiko Henderson, was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries. Sapulpa police cited her for a small amount of marijuana.

Authorities said there has been a recent surge in police pursuits across Green Country.

Tulsa Police Traffic Safety Coordinator Craig Murray said what starts as a traffic citation can become 90 days in jail or between $100 and more than $1,000 in fines in the city of Tulsa. He said all drivers should "expect the unexpected," and safely pull over any time there are emergency lights. They should also watch for any pursuits that may happen on the roadways around them.
