Getting back in shape post baby

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) – Setting aside time in our busy schedules to exercise can be difficult, but that task gets even more difficult once you have children.

This is something I learned firsthand after my daughter was born.

I know it's possible because there are lots of moms out there that do it, but I'm determined to get back into my old workout routine sooner as opposed to later. Here are a few tips for any of you that may be in the same boat that I am.

First of all, you have to enjoy the type of exercise because if you don't you won't be motivated to get back in the saddle whether it's biking, walking, swimming, running, or something else.

"Find a class or do something you enjoy because you're more likely to stick with it," said Skylar Stewart-Clark, mother of a five-year-old. "Take things step by step and pick a reasonable goal like 30 minutes twice a week and gradually increase your amount of activity."

Second, don't feel guilty. Exercise is important for you to stay healthy. You also want to be a good role model for your children.

Some moms join a gym with childcare, but others work out with their children.

"I bought a jogging stroller and started going on jogs after six weeks, " said Liza Agrest Varadi, a pediatrician and mother. "It was exercise for me, fresh air for baby."

Third, power through the sleep deprivation and just do it! A mom that exercises is often happier, less stressed and a more fit mom.

If you see me at the bridge run, I may be doing more walking than running but at least I'll be there in the fresh air getting some exercise. And do me a favor, give me a thumbs up for just being there -- us new moms need as much encouragement as we can get!
