ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) — With summer just around the corner, the Isle of Palms Town Council says there is a solution to waiting on stalled connector traffic. The town is considering adding more cameras to help monitor traffic on IOP.

One council members says he wants it to be as easy as checking a cellphone.

"When there is a traffic back up there are plenty of complaints. This would give folks a way to know if they want to come out or not to the Isle of Palms," says Marty Bettelli, Mayor pro-tem and chairman of the public safety committee.

He says a new surveillance camera placed at the intersection of Palm Boulevard and the connector will help island visitors gauge travel expectations.

"We're hopeful that this will get on the South Carolina highway department's website and folks will be able to look on their iPhones, or whatever the device their using and see what the traffic conditions are, as you know we get very busy during the summer, especially during some of the holidays," he said.

The connector camera is one of several expected to be installed.

Bettelli says four cameras will be added to the median on Ocean Boulevard and two cameras will be added to the commercial district where the public restrooms are located. Police will watch traffic from the public safety building.

"They'll have a monitor nearby where they can see it, if they see traffic is backing up they can get the right number of personnel into the right spot to take care of it," said Bettelli.

Bettelli hopes the cameras will be running for the Memorial Day weekend, but it's not a done deal just yet. The proposal still needs the approval of one committee and town council.

The cost for the cameras would come out of the hospitality tax fund. The money for the cameras was budgeted last year and the final cost would be just over $25,000, including installation.
