250 volunteers work for Summerville Cares service day

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – The sound of hundreds of people working to clean up storm debris and overgrown paths filled the air Saturday morning at Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site.

Young and old alike gathered in the park as part of the Summerville Cares Day of Service to clear invasive vegetation along the riverfront, add mulch to the pathways around the park, and fill in holes.

The work was done by 25 organizations, according to James Freston, one of the day's organizers.

"Once a year, we collect our resources and do projects all around the city," said Freston. "We're doing 51 projects right now."

The focus at Colonial Dorchester Park was to refresh the landscape and make the river visible once again from the old fort, he said. Freston said 13,000 cubic feet of mulch from downed trees was brought into the park.

The day started with a breakfast and kick-off party. It ended at 1 p.m. with a celebratory hot dog picnic.

"It's a wonderful resource and we're trying to put it on the map," Freston said.
