Population losses a concern in Orangeburg County

Posted: Updated:

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Orangeburg County officials are trying to figure out why the county's population shrunk while the rest of the state grew by 3 percent.

U.S. Census numbers released earlier this month showed Orangeburg County's 2013 population was 90,942 people, down about 1,500 from the 2010 census.

Births during the period outnumbered deaths, leaving about 2,000 people to have moved away over three years without being replaced.

Orangeburg County Development Commission Executive Director Gregg Robinson told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg (http://bit.ly/RfSilF ) that the county is adding industry, but may be losing the workers in those new jobs to people who don't want to live in the county because they want more restaurants and shopping options or a different way of life.
