Festivals finish up the weekend on James Island

Posted: Updated:

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) – Paddleboats lined the water at James Island County Park and sand castles lined the beach on Folly on Sunday as the East Coast Paddlesports and Outdoor Festival and Sean and Sand Festival wrapped up.

The festival offered a little something for everyone, whether it was canoe and kayak instruction, archery, disc golf, or biking.

"Coming here allows us to put a lot of consumers on the water, let them experience all types of water crafts within paddle sports. It's probably more stuff here on the beach than you can find on any one place in the Charleston or South Carolina Lowcountry area," said Ken Schill, the sales Southeast representative for several companies.

On Folly Beach, thousands of people gathered for the 24th annual Folly Beach Sea and Sand Festival Pageant.

The festival lasted all weekend and ended Sunday afternoon with a sand sculpture contest.

"We have a couple of different categories. There is a best overall; there is a best of Folly theme; and there is a best family entry," said Vince Perna, this year's sand castle commissioner. "We wanted to allow the kids to enjoy it as well as some of the guys that came out to build professional castles."

The winner of the sand castle content won a four-night oceanfront stay on Folly Beach.
