Indictment paperwork shows Berkeley County deputy sold 2 guns

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) – A Goose Creek man was charged Monday in a two-count indictment of selling firearms to people who are prohibited from owning them.

According to U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles, 60-year-old Tony Allen Riley, of Goose Creek, was indicted in federal court. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each charge. Officials say Riley was a member of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office at the time of his arrest.

Indictment papers show Riley sold two guns -- a Mossberg Maverick 88 shotgun and a .38 Special revolver -- to a person "under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year."

The shotgun was sold on Dec. 17 and the revolver was sold two days later, according to court documents.

The FBI investigated the case.

Sheriff Wayne DeWitt issued a statement Monday afternoon saying Riley had been terminated.

"I was surprised and disappointed to learn today of the arrest of Tony Riley by Federal officials.  Mr. Tony Riley has already been terminated from his employment with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.  We are disappointed in Mr. Riley's conduct and want to assure the public it does not reflect on the integrity of other members of the sheriff's office," DeWitt said.

Riley was assigned a $25,000 unsecured bond.
