Prosecutor: Alimony payments led to Folly man's murder-for-hire plot

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) – The family of a Folly Beach man made a tearful request Monday afternoon in federal court to keep him behind bars until his next court appearance.

Prosecutors say he tried to hire someone to kill his ex-wife and anyone else who would see the crime.

Monday's court proceeding was a preliminary hearing for Lawrence Lee, the man who allegedly put together the murder-for-hire plot. He was arrested last week after the FBI said he was ready to kill his ex-wife.

A special agent for the FBI told the court that Lee was behind in alimony payments and was willing to pay $5,000 to have his former spouse murdered at her North Charleston home.

On the witness stand, the agent said Lee explained his plan to a tenant who lives at a property he owns on Planters Road in West Ashley.

After three separately recorded conversations, Lee allegedly planned a golf trip to Myrtle Beach so he would be out of town when his wife – and anyone else who happened to be in her home – was gunned down.

Photos were even provided of the woman and her home, prosecutors said in court.

Prosecutors also showed that Lee withdrew $5,000 from his turf business in Kentucky and gave it to his tenant for the hit.

Defense attorney Andy Savage spoke on behalf of the family after the hearing, saying Lee is an Air Force veteran who has served his country with honor.

For now, Lee remains in the Charleston County Detention Center. The case will be handed over to a Grand Jury at a later date.
