Berkeley County school board looking for solution to dangerous crosswalk

SANGAREE, S. C. (WCIV) -- The Berkeley County school board voted last week to ask several government agencies to help with traffic near Sangaree Elementary and Intermediate schools.

It's the same intersection where a crossing guard was hit by a car two years ago. Parents whose children attend the school say it's still dangerous for their kids to cross the street.

"It makes me nervous," said Aldo Napoli, who has three kids who attend Sangaree Elementary School.

Napoli says he is glad the district is doing whatever they can to make the school's crosswalk safer.

The district has requested traffic studies from the Department of Transportation in the past: once in 2005, another in 2008 and again in 2011. The DOT said there was not enough traffic in the area to warrant a light.

"Unless you see it for yourself and you are a parent of a child who has to cross this intersection, I don't think you can really get the gist of how bad it really is by just putting out equipment to test the traffic," said Napoli.

Tommy Newell also lives in the area. He says he still keeps hope alive, and also has a few ideas of his own.

"I think a stop light would help with the vehicular traffic, but in my opinion an elevated cross walk to get the children above the danger because when school is out there won't be any cross guards helping the kids across the street," said Newell.

Napoli says until something is done, neighbors will keep fighting.

"We will make sure that we keep the pressure on them doing whatever it takes to make sure they know how we feel," said Napoli.
