Mt. Pleasant public forum's focus on proposed park

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials plan to break ground on a new town hall later this year, but they also want to know what kind of park will surround it on nearly two acres of land.

Council chamber is where policies and laws are made. But on Monday night, planning took the spotlight. Designers and architects listened and took notes from those offering input about the town's plan to create a park next to a new town hall.

"This is a true civic building.  This is our town hall.  It's going to have a great presence on Houston Northcutt Boulevard.  And the park is going to be such a big part of it.  So we want to make sure the citizens have their say," said Linda Page, Mayor of Mt. Pleasant.

The $22-million project will change the town's center of government.  A new building for town staff and police will stand next to a new park along a busy road.

"Every consulting firm from structural engineers to electrical engineers to civil engineers.  All of those firms are located in Mount Pleasant.  So it's a one hundred percent effort from the entire design team," said Sam Herin, an architect for the project.

Right now, those designers are showing an assortment of photos with amenities from other parks.  They want to know what people like and don't like about them.  Long-time resident Alys Anne Wiedeke is also a board member for East Cooper Land Trust.

So far, she likes what she sees.

"One of the things we like about this green space, this park, is it's another opportunity for the town to have a dedicated green space in the middle of town that can be preserved forever," said Wiedeke.

The $22-million price tag is for the new town hall.  The cost of the park will be determined after other public forums, and a final decision from town council.

It'll be paid with monies from the tax increment fund.
