3 inmates accused of complicated Georgetown bank robbery plot

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) – Three Georgetown County inmates spent their time in the jail planning a bank robbery that included a school-based diversion only to be foiled Wednesday by deputies and detention center officers.

According to officials, the three men – identified as Ryan Bonneau, Willie Edwards and Michael Hart –were all serving time on unrelated charges in the Georgetown County Detention Center when investigators uncovered a plot to rob a bank.

Officials said the three were planning a diversion at nearby Waccamaw Elementary School's sports fields to lure the deputies there and away from the rest of town so the three inmates could rob the Wells Fargo bank in Litchfield without the threat of arrest. Officials did not say what diversion was planned.

However, investigators foiled the alleged plan before it ever really got off the ground.

Investigators figured out Bonneau, Edwards and Hart worked together to plan the crime without the help of anyone outside the jail, deputies said. Now the three men have each been charged with one count of criminal conspiracy.

The school district and the sheriff's office worked together the make sure no students or staff members at the school were in danger, the sheriff's office said.
