NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A portion of North Charleston road was blocked for hours early Friday morning for what was first described as a HAZMAT situation.

Officials later confirmed a meth lab investigation was underway along the 2800 block of Otranto Road. One man has identified as a suspect.

According to a release from North Charleston police, a man called 911 to say the suspect broke into his home with a baseball bat and assaulted one of the occupants.

According to the report the suspect, identified as 34-year-old John Eric Phillips, was "running around the house shouting and breaking things." One of the occupants of the home said he grabbed a shotgun to protect himself.

An anonymous tip informed police that there was a meth lab in the home and officers reported smelling the familiar odor in the suspect's room. When officers opened the door they said they saw "a cloud of smoke" and "items commonly used in a meth lab."

The victim, the suspect's mother and another elderly woman were evacuated from the home for their safety.

An NCPD spokesperson said a warrant for manufacturing meth is being drawn for Phillips. He is described as a white male with blonde hair and brown eyes. He's about 5'08" tall and weighs approximately 163 pounds.

If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of John Eric Phillips, please call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
