NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Two people were arrested Thursday afternoon after police officers found a handgun and nearly 30 grams of marijuana was found.

According to North Charleston police, 18-year-old Lewis Hairston and 21-year-old Thanielle Edward were arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana. Hairston was also charged with unlawful carry of a firearm and possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number.

The report states officers saw Hairston and Edward sitting in a car at the Appian Way Apartments with something that appeared to be pot smoke coming from the open windows. When officers got closer, they could smell pot smoke, they said.

Both were asked to get out of the car and were searched. Hairston said he had a gun for his protection. Officers found a KBI FEG .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun with a hollow tip cartridge.

The report states Hairston was also carrying a digital scale and 27 grams of marijuana.

Edward had a 1-gram bag of marijuana.

Both were taken into custody and lodged at the Dorchester Jail Annex.
