State’s first horror film fest held in North Charleston

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Screams and moans were coming from the old Naval base in North Charleston, but nothing was wrong. It was just South Carolina’s first horror film festival.

The Crimson Screen Horror Film Festival was at the Sterett Hall Auditorium in North Charleston. Attendees could watch a wide array of horror movies, from thrillers to zombies, from werewolves to vampires.

In the spirit of the genre, people came dressed in their most frightful attire.

“The support and number of people that showed up, you know, shocked us. We were expecting maybe a handful of people and we were overwhelmed. There were hundreds of people that showed up, especially during the South Carolina films,” said Tommy Faircloth, the festival’s director.

The films came from all over the world, Faircloth said, but the group wanted to spotlight some of the South Carolina film makers in hopes of inspiring them.

The festival grew with support, Faircloth said, adding local artists, musician and even food trucks for festival goers who were scared hungry.

“It’s like a mini-circus,” he said.

All of the featured films were competing for a Crimmy Award. Categories included best feature, best short, and best actor.

Faircloth said the plan is to make it bigger next year, possible over a full weekend and attract even more film makers.
