COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Dozens of South Carolina veterans have gathered at the Statehouse to ask lawmakers to improve benefits for those who served in the military.

Groups such as the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the Military Officers Association of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Vietnam Veterans of America were represented, among other.

Retired Army Col. David Lobb of the Military Officers Association says there are bills before lawmakers that would help veterans and their families.

Lobb says one measure would expand education benefits, while the other allows increased tax exemptions for military retirement pay.

Other speakers pointed to issues such as expanding state veterans' nursing homes, increasing mental health care and expanding services for low income and homeless veterans as part of their agenda.
