Ridgeland man sentenced in brother-in-law shooting

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Ridgeland man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday for shooting his brother-in-law on Lady's Island last year.

According to the solicitor's office, Malcolm Brabham was convicted of attempted murder and gun possession during a crime.

Last July Brabham and his brother-in-law were leaving a bar when they got into an argument about how the man was treating Brabham's sister.

The brother-in-law got out of Brabham's car, but Brabham followed and pulled out a gun, firing one shot that hit the other man in the chest.

Brabham's brother-in-law managed to walk to a neighbor's home and call for help.

He nearly died at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and was taken by helicopter to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for more treatment.

“That injury not only could have killed him, but it changed his entire life,” said assistant solicitor Mary Jordan Lempesis, who prosecuted the case. “He is lucky to be here with us today.”

The victim who works as a cook in Beaufort told the court that the injury makes it difficult to use his right arm and hand. He will have a permanent disability as a result of the shooting.

This was the second time Brabham had pulled a gun on his brother-in-law. In 2009, Brabham pulled a gun on him and fired a shot, but missed.
