JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- An abandoned podium gave way to a more intimate discussion between police and the James Island community Thursday night.

“I didn’t know what to expect but it was good meeting. We had some very good questions and I hope that we grow from here,” said Lt. Rusty Myers, who commands the CPD team that patrols James Island and Johns Island.

“I thought it was a really good meeting and I’m impressed with what I heard and saw tonight,” Carolyn Lee said.

Charleston Police hosted its first of four town hall meetings with a goal of starting dialogue.

“Get to know your neighbors. Work together, talk about your problems, let us know if there’s something we can help with,” Myers said.

“Sometimes someone sees a suspicious vehicle and they say, 'Oh that’s nothing.' But it could be something. Don’t hesitate. Call the police,” Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said.

People who live on James Island penned questions regarding their concerns to police. The questions ranged from whether police can see driver's license photos when they run license numbers (not usually), to what qualifies as worth of a noise complaint.

“If it's loud and unsettling, then we can go look at that,” Chief Greg Mullen said.

Lee was one of the James Island residents asking questions. She was concerned about the intersection at Fort Johnson and Secessionville Roads. After listening to what the officers said, Lee was pleased they listened to what she said.

“I think everyone’s aware of it and so are they. So am I satisfied? Yes. I think they gave intelligent answers as they did all night,” she said.

Charleston Police planned to have more town hall meetings in West Ashley, downtown and on Daniel Island.
