Dorchester County sanitary sewer system overflows

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Dorchester County Water and Sewer Department said that its facility in North Charleston experienced an overflow on Thursday.

According to officials, the overflow came from a manhole after a failure at the pump station. Roughly 4,000 gallons of sewage was released, officials said.

Crews put in a bypass pump until the pump station was repaired and fully functional, and the spill was cleaned up and put back in the sewage system, the water department reports.

Officials did say that some sewage may have made it into the marsh that is about 200 feet away from the manhole where the spill happened.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified.
