Orangeburg traffic stop ends with drug arrest

Posted: Updated:
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man is in jail after evading a safety checkpoint earlier this week.

According to Orangeburg County deputies, officers tried to stop Wesley Lamonte Givens at a safety checkpoint, but Givens turned on a side street to navigate around them. During a traffic stop, Givens refused to hand over his license.

When officers told Givens to get out of the car, he ran from them so one of the officers used his Taser to stop Givens, deputies said.

During a search of Givens' car, deputies said they found crack cocaine, oxycodone, oxycontin, and a handgun.

He was arrested and charged with possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, trafficking meth or cocaine base, and a weapons possession charge.
