Search over for father, 2 sons found in Congaree National Park

Posted: Updated:
HOPKINS, S.C. (AP/WACH) - Authorities say a father and two of his sons have been found in the swamps at Congaree National Park.

National Park Service Rangers told WACH that they made contact with the missing man and his sons on Tuesday. Later, the park service tweeted that the threesome have been rescued and all are in stable condition.

Department of Natural Resources officers say they heard the man yell for help Sunday, but they have not been able to pinpoint his location in the thick woods and swampy terrain. Authorities also don't know the condition of the boys, who are ages 6 and 10.

The father and sons were reported missing late Saturday night. Wildlife officers say they are near the River Trail, which cuts deep into the park down to the Congaree River.\

Natural Resources Department Capt. Robert McCullough says crews have used all-terrain to search the 24,000 acres of woods and swamp.

He says it's easy to get lost in the park even during daytime conditions.

More than 50 people are involved in the search in the park about 15 miles southeast of Columbia. The Richland County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Park Service Rangers, the Lexington County Fire Service and the Columbia Fire Department are assisting in the search.
