Help fight hunger by just going to your mailbox

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- The National Association of Letter Carriers will again be doing their part to help Stamp Out Hunger across America.

On Saturday, May 10, you can help fight hunger by simply leaving a bag or two (or more) of non-perishable food  next to your mailbox.

Your mail carrier will pick up it up when they drop off your mail and the food will be donated to the  Lowcountry Food Bank.

"Currently, 49 million Americans, or one in six, are unsure where their next meal is coming from," said Harry Spratlin with the USPS. "Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly five million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help."

Charleston is one of 10,000 places across the country taking part in the event. Last year, Lowcountry Food Bank received 127,617 pounds of food.

" The food drive’s timing is crucial," said Spratlin. "Most donations are received during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need."
