Stabbing victim's mother wants arrest in son's death

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston police are still looking for clues into a stabbing that claimed the life of a young father last week. Now that man's mother is saying her son was just trying to help.

Detectives say it happened at the Dorchester Village Mobile Home Park.

"He would do anything for anyone. And all I'm asking is for justice for my son," said Jacqueline Pelfrey as she sobbed.

Pelfrey says her heart is broken after the tragic death of her 30-year-old son Stewart Pelfrey. Last Friday, North Charleston Police responded to Diedrich Street after reports of a stabbing involving three people.

"My son then ran to intervene with the knife that was coming down on his cousin. And he was stabbed through the heart. And died at the scene," cried Pelfrey.

Family members say Stewart Pelfrey and two others tried to break up an argument between a couple outside these mobile homes, but detectives say the man who was killed, and the others, assaulted the alleged suspect in a car.

When they dragged him out of the vehicle, the alleged suspect pulled a knife.

"How is it self-defense? He stabbed my son through the heart. My son didn't even put his hands on the boy. All he was doing was intervening to help another person," explained Pelfrey.

So far, no charges have been filed.

Today, loved ones comfort each other and remember the life Stewart Pelfrey leaves behind.

"He lived and breathed this baby girl. She's without her father now. And she loved him so much," said Jacqueline Pelfrey as she held a photo of her son and granddaughter.

And they hope more information will help police solve the case.

"Please. If anyone knows anything, tell police. There's more of it out there. Please, for my son," said Pelfrey.

If you have information, you’re asked to call North Charleston Police at 554-5700.
