CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- At Mitchell Elementary students have been getting green thumbs all year long. The nonprofit Green Heart Project planted the seeds for the community garden at Mitchell Elementary in downtown Charleston.

On Thursday, the public will get a taste of the produce the students have worked hard to grow. The Green Heart Project's 4th Annual Harvest Dinner will be held at the park across from Mitchell Elementary on Perry Street Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

The charity teaches students at local schools the importance of eating right and growing healthy, fresh produce. The event gives the community a chance to see what the kids have been digging in the dirt for and to get a taste of all the green goodness. All the proceeds from the fundraiser goes right back into the ground in supporting the Green Heart's goal of getting more gardens in area schools.

Local vendors will be helping out with the food for the Harvest Dinner and the Lowcountry Food Bank will be on site with their mobile farmer's market to pass out produce to families in need.
