OAKLAND, Calif., May 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, May 2nd, over 500 guests from across the San Francisco Bay Area will gather for the 26th Annual Strong, Smart and Bold Luncheon, benefitting Girls Inc.'s nationally acclaimed programs for girls from underserved communities. The Strong, Smart and Bold Luncheon honors prominent women leaders who work every day to empower women and girls worldwide to be strong, smart, and bold. This year's "voices inspiring change" event Award Honorees include:
- Renel Brooks-Moon, The "Voice" of the San Francisco Giants, reigning as the only female public address announcer in Major League Baseball today, her STRONG work has been recognized by the MLB Hall of Fame.
- Delaine Eastin, The first woman elected as the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, her influential voice and SMART leadership resulted in $2.5 billion invested to reduce class size and the adoption of statewide academic standards in math and reading.
- Kate Kendall, The Executive Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, her active voice and BOLD advocacy has brought LGBT civil rights issues to the forefront of discussion in the United States, and earned her the recognition as one of California's Top 100 Attorneys.
The featured guest emcee, San Francisco Bay Area Radio Personality Rosie Allen, will also be on-hand as attending guests honor the strong, smart and bold women in their own lives and hear the inspirational stories of three Girls Inc. teen scholars who are creating bold futures and changing the world, one girl at a time.
The Strong Smart and Bold Luncheon raises critical funding and awareness for Girls Inc. which provides year-round academic achievement and skills-building programs, as well as community behavioral health counseling services to nearly 7,000 girls and families, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas of Alameda County. No other youth agency in the Bay Area offers such comprehensive programming designed specifically for the unique needs of girls. With the agency's move to Oakland's downtown in 2013, it has become Alameda County's first and only resource center for girls, allowing even more girls to have strong, smart and bold futures.
