2 southbound lanes briefly closed on Ravenel Bridge during man's arrest

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two southbound lanes of the Ravenel Bridge were shut down Friday afternoon for what was described as a traffic stop by county dispatch officials. The lanes reopened about 90 minutes later.

A state Department of Transportation camera captured police officers surrounding a man and handcuffing him while he was lying face down on the outermost lane of the bridge, however.

Traffic was backing up with the two lanes closed. By 6:15 p.m., however, traffic was moving freely and police had cleared the area with the suspect in custody.

Mount Pleasant police said patrol officers tried to stop the suspect for reckless driving, on Coleman Boulevard near Whilden Street, but the driver tried to evade the officers. A chase began, leading officers down Coleman Boulevard and onto the Ravenel Bridge where the suspect stopped, police said.

Police said the man was taken into custody without further incident.
