Democrats bring optimism to Columbia at convention

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Democrats are optimistic they can stem a Republican tide that has taken over the state.

State Democrats held their convention in Columbia this weekend.

Republicans currently are in the governor's office, the other eight statewide constitutional offices, both U.S. Senate seats and six of South Carolina's seven U.S. House seats.

But state Democratic Party Chairman Jamie Harrison says all that power has made Republicans arrogant and unable to understand the problems of regular people in South Carolina.

Harrison told delegates to look at the poor conditions of the roads that brought them to Columbia to see that Republicans don't care.

One of the most popular people at the convention was state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, who is running for governor. He had delegates chanting his name before his speech.
