Sheriff: Woman told deputies she wanted to die

Posted: Updated:

LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 55-year-old woman shot and killed by Lancaster County deputies during a traffic stop told one of the officers the incident was about to be suicide by cop.

Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile released details about last week's shooting. He says the deputies pulled over Ingrid Mayer on April 24 after a woman called 911 to report a car being driven recklessly.

Mayer pulled over and gave one officer her license. As he went back to his cruiser, the sheriff says Mayer told the officer who stayed "this is about to be suicide by cop."

Authorities say she then drove toward the deputy, who fired, killing her.

Investigators say Mayer was charged with driving under the influence by state troopers two days before she was killed.
