Construction companies settle Colleton road project suit with US government

Posted: Updated:

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two construction projects settled claims they filed false claims with the U.S. government while working on a road project in Colleton County.

According to U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles, The Lane Construction Corporation and McAfee Design and Distributing Co., Inc. agreed this week to pay out $400,000 to resolve the allegations against them.

The settlement resolves allegations about work done during a federally funded highway project in Colleton County.

“The District of South Carolina continues to devote significant resources to pursuing claims under the False Claims Act, and this settlement is yet another in a long string of successes,” said Nettles.

The settlement came about after a private citizen filed a lawsuit on behalf of the government due to the alleged false claims. The whistleblower will collect an $80,000 payout as part of the alert.
