Texas Trade Mission takes in Austin's newest commute solution
AUSTIN, May 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Minister of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation of Ireland, Richard Bruton, has arrived in Austin to promote Irish businesses in Texas. The Minister attended Enterprise Ireland's Business Breakfast yesterday with Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Paul Steinberg, Vice President for Carma. The Mayor and Minister made the exciting announcement that Ireland has chosen Austin as the home for its next U.S. consulate, only the second international consulate in the capital city. Minister Bruton, Mayor Leffingwell, and Carma team members marked the occasion with a ceremonial carpool in the orange Carma Tesla.
Carma Carpooling is the breakthrough smartphone app that helps people reach out to their local communities and create carpools. The app also enables sharing of journey costs, meaning drivers can cut down on expenses and riders have a new affordable commute solution. Carma launched in Austin in February of this year as part of a pilot project with the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority that provides toll discounts for users who carpool along certain Austin-area toll roads.
Carma differs from other so-called 'ridesharing' apps because it has full governmental approval through exclusive public-private partnerships. Working hand-in-hand with state and local transportation authorities affords Carma unique opportunities including the world's-first toll rebate scheme, which has seen enormous success in Austin.
Richard Bruton is on a trade mission to promote Irish-Texas trade, and this Carma public-private partnership is a great example of how an Irish business can work with the state of Texas in order to deliver solutions to our growing traffic levels in Austin.
"This is the perfect example of how Irish companies are innovators in technology and transportation issues that affect people in all geographies," said Minister Bruton. "Austin has an incredible sense of community and the Carma app is an easy way for people to tap into this spirit and help each other get there together. It's great for Irish business, and it's great for Austin."
